When to use this landed cost estimate
Use this calculator when a supplier quote only shows the factory price or FOB price and you still need a realistic view of what the goods may cost after freight, customs duty, clearance, and local delivery. It is especially useful before paying a deposit, comparing suppliers, or deciding whether a higher MOQ lowers the real unit cost.
Practical example
If a product costs $4.80 per unit for 1,000 units, the product subtotal is $4,800. Add $850 freight, $60 insurance, duty calculated on the import value, $180 broker fees, $220 local delivery, and a 3% buffer. The final landed cost per unit is often very different from the supplier’s first unit price.
Common mistakes
- Comparing suppliers by unit price only and ignoring freight, packaging, and duty.
- Using a duty rate without checking the correct HS code and destination-country rules.
- Forgetting local delivery after the shipment arrives at the port or warehouse.
- Ignoring inspection, sample, or document costs when the order is small.

FAQ
Is this customs advice? No. This is a planning estimate. Always confirm HS code, duty, taxes, and customs rules with a qualified broker or local authority.
Should freight be included before calculating duty? Some countries calculate duty on product value only; others use CIF-like values. This simple estimate includes product, freight, and insurance as a conservative planning basis.
