Why Is My IP Location Wrong? Checks and Next Steps

IP & time help · Mr Kcal Store

An unexpected city in an IP lookup usually describes the network address, rather than the physical position of your device. First check whether the address itself is the one you expected. A correct public IP with an unexpected city is a different problem from a connection using an unexpected address.

Check your public IP and network

Check the address before judging the city

  1. Record the connection and time. Note whether you are using home Wi-Fi, mobile data, a company network or a VPN. Copy the lookup result so you can compare the address, provider and timestamp.
  2. Compare the same address. Paste the copied address into another lookup instead of allowing both websites to auto-detect independently. One site may receive IPv4 while another receives IPv6.
  3. Read the network organization. A company gateway, VPN exit or hosting network may be the expected public endpoint even when it is far from you. An ISP name does not identify the person using the address.
  4. Separate an IP result from a website’s location setting. A shopping or weather site can also use a saved account region, selected delivery location or browser permission. Changing an IP database entry will not necessarily change those settings.

What each result tells you to do

The address matches, but cities differKeep both provider names and timestamps. Treat city precision as uncertain.
The addresses differCompare IPv4 with IPv4, then IPv6 with IPv6, using the protocol buttons in the tool.
The network is an expected company or VPN exitCheck the intended exit with your network administrator or provider.
Only one website has the wrong regionCheck its account, region and location settings, then contact that website.

For example, a laptop in one city may reach a website through a company gateway in another. That result can be consistent with the connection path. A lookup cannot establish the laptop’s street address.

Request a correction with useful evidence

Send the affected service the public address or prefix, expected country or region, connection provider, date observed and lookup source. Ask which database it uses. The service may need its own update; changing one database does not update every website.

Do not send a home address or identity document just to demonstrate an inaccurate city. If this is a work connection, let the network owner handle prefix-level evidence.

Does the wrong city mean my VPN failed?

A city mismatch alone cannot answer that question. This tool reports public network information; it does not test DNS, WebRTC or every application’s route. Compare the expected public endpoint and use your provider’s specific diagnostic instructions.

Are the coordinates GPS coordinates?

No. They are approximate coordinates associated with an IP database record. They must not be treated as a person’s or device’s exact position.
