IP & time help · Mr Kcal Store
An IP lookup has two separate jobs: find the public address for your connection, then ask a provider for information about that address. A failure in either stage can leave a tool without a result. Use the message beside the result to choose the next check.
Choose the check that matches the message
| Message or symptom | Try this next |
|---|---|
| Public IP could not be detected | Paste a known public address into Search. If manual lookup works, automatic detection is the stage to investigate. |
| Enter a valid IPv4 or IPv6 address | Paste the address only. Remove an https:// prefix, path, port, square brackets or copied commentary. |
| Private or local address | Use the internet-facing public address. A router address such as 192.168.1.1 is not publicly geolocatable. |
| Lookup timed out or service unavailable | Retry once. If a different public address also fails, the lookup provider or network path may be unavailable. |
| IP appears, but city or timezone is unavailable | The provider may not have that field. A missing city does not make the IP string invalid. |
| A city appears, but it seems wrong | Use the location-accuracy guide rather than treating it as a connection error. |
A manual test that separates the stages
Enter 8.8.8.8 in Search. This is a public Google DNS address used as a test target here, not your connection’s address. If network details load, the manual lookup path is working at that moment. It does not prove that automatic detection, your VPN route or all providers are healthy.
Then use “Use my IP” again. If that step fails, record the exact message. Check whether the browser or network blocks the detection service. Do not turn off security software or change a company proxy just to force a result; a manual lookup can still be useful.
Why the clock can keep running after a lookup fails
The page can still format your device’s clock in the browser timezone. It labels this as browser time only when no valid IP timezone is available. A moving clock is therefore not proof that the IP lookup succeeded.
On a new lookup, previous IP details are cleared. This avoids reading an old successful result as the answer to a later failed query. A newer search also takes priority over an earlier request that finishes late.
What to include in a useful bug report
- The page URL and exact error message.
- Whether you used automatic detection, a protocol button or a manually entered public address.
- The browser version and observation time.
- A non-sensitive test address and what you expected to happen.
Send the report through Contact. You do not need to send your home address, account password or private network screenshots.
