IP & time help · Mr Kcal Store
Your IP timezone comes from a location record for a public network address. Your browser timezone comes from the browser’s runtime settings, usually reflecting your device settings. They can differ while both displays are working as designed.

Read the labels before comparing the numbers
| Display | What supplies it | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| IP timezone | The lookup provider’s record for the queried public IP | The person’s current physical location |
| Browser timezone | The browser’s default timezone setting | The VPN exit or public IP’s region |
| IP local clock | Your device’s current instant formatted in the returned IP timezone | An independent check of your system clock accuracy |
Mr Kcal Store labels a browser-time fallback explicitly. If the lookup returns no valid IP timezone, the clock must not be read as the queried network’s local time.
Work through a mismatch in four steps
- Copy the timezone names. Names such as
Europe/LondonandAsia/Shanghaiconvey more than an hour value alone. Check the calendar date too. - Check which address you queried. Looking up a supplier’s server or a VPN exit should not necessarily match your own browser.
- Check the device’s time and timezone separately. A correct timezone cannot repair an incorrect device clock. Use your operating system’s time settings when the current instant is wrong.
- Compare a fixed timestamp. For log investigation, retain the original timestamp and its UTC offset. Do not attach today’s offset to an old event without checking the event date.
A practical example with a clear date
At 12:00 UTC on 15 January 2026, London is at 12:00 and Shanghai is at 20:00. A browser set to Shanghai and an IP record associated with London can therefore show an eight-hour difference for the same instant. This is a demonstration, not a location test.
Daylight-saving rules can change the difference for other dates. Use a named timezone and the intended meeting date when agreeing a call. The IP result alone does not tell you where another person will be at that future time.
Why a VPN does not always change the browser timezone
The public connection endpoint and the browser’s timezone are separate inputs. Changing the endpoint does not necessarily change the device’s timezone setting. A difference is useful context, but it is not enough to prove a leak or identify a person.
Can an IP address give the exact time?
An IP lookup can provide a timezone to format a clock. The displayed clock still depends on the device’s current time and the runtime’s timezone rules. It is not a time-synchronization service.
Reference and next steps
MDN documents the browser’s resolved timezone. Check an unexpected IP location, or use Time Tools to compare world clocks.
