Network identity and location limits

Read an IP result as network evidence, not device GPS

A public IP identifies an internet-facing network connection. The returned city and timezone come from an IP allocation database, so they can help with diagnostics and scheduling without proving a device street address.

Public versus private IP

The public address is visible to internet services. Home and office devices can share one public IPv4 address through a router, while private addresses such as 192.168.x.x normally remain inside the local network.

ISP and ASN

The ISP names the network provider reported for the address. The autonomous system number identifies the routing organization that announces the IP range; it may be a carrier, cloud provider, enterprise, or VPN operator.

City and timezone

Location is inferred from the registered or observed network range. Mobile gateways, corporate exits, cloud hosting, and VPN endpoints can appear in a different city or country from the person using the connection.

IPv4 and IPv6 changes

Dynamic IPv4 leases can change after reconnecting. IPv6 privacy addresses and provider-assigned prefixes may also rotate, so a different address does not automatically mean a different physical device.

Record these facts when investigating an IP
