Package Weight Calculator

Package Weight Calculator

Estimate package actual weight, dimensional weight, and chargeable weight before sending goods by courier, air freight, or ecommerce fulfillment.

Calculate package weight and billable weight

Enter the actual packed weight and the outer package dimensions. The calculator compares actual package weight with dimensional weight to estimate the likely billable weight.

Enter your package details and click Calculate.

This is an estimate for planning and supplier communication. Your carrier, forwarder, marketplace, destination country, contract, and service level may use a different divisor, rounding rule, minimum weight, or surcharge.

Actual package weight vs billable package weight

Actual package weight is the physical packed weight on a scale. Billable package weight may be higher if the package is large for its actual weight. This is especially important for ecommerce items, samples, replacement parts, product photography samples, and lightweight bulky goods.

Use the final packed box size, including protective material and outer carton. A small packaging change can change the shipping estimate.

Real-world use case

You are preparing a sample order from a Chinese supplier. The item weighs 2 kg, but after foam and carton packaging the box is 45 x 35 x 25 cm and 3 kg. This tool estimates whether the carrier may bill by actual package weight or dimensional weight.

Common mistakes

  • Using product weight before packaging instead of final packed weight.
  • Ignoring empty carton, foam, inserts, labels, and protective material.
  • Forgetting that sample packaging may be different from mass-production carton packaging.
  • Entering centimeters while leaving an imperial divisor selected.
  • Assuming a smaller product always means a lower shipping cost if packaging remains bulky.

When this tool is not enough

This is a package-level estimate. It does not include customs duty, declared value rules, insurance, return shipping, marketplace fulfillment fees, or carrier surcharges for long, fragile, restricted, or remote delivery packages.

FAQ

What package weight should I enter?

Enter the final packed package weight, including the product, inner packing, protection, and outer box.

Why is my billable package weight higher than scale weight?

The package may be bulky. Carriers often compare actual weight with dimensional weight and bill the higher value.

Can this help reduce shipping cost?

Yes. It can show whether reducing carton size or changing packaging may lower dimensional weight before you request a quote.
